In the novel And Then There Were None literary elements are used to create tone and suspense which helps the story flow and conveys its message if it has one. In order to create tone and suspense, we must identify the literary elements used to create them. These literary elements include foreshadowing, major events, and language used in the story. Foreshadowing is a major component to the story as it is used to create much of the story’s tone and suspense. An example of foreshadowing to create tone and suspense can be seen in the quote “You lost touch with the world-an island was a world of its own. A world, perhaps, from which you might never return.” (Christie 36). This quote uses foreshadowing to show the reader that the island the people are about to arrive to is much more than just a normal island and that they may never return after arriving at the island. This quote also changes the tone of the story completely from a very light hearted tone to a mysterious tone as not everyone talks about going somewhere then never coming back in the way Armstrong did in the quote. …show more content…
Major events in the story have a huge impact on the story’s tone and suspense. This enormous change to the stories tone and suspense can be seen in the quote “‘Mr. Owen could only come to the island in one way. ‘It is perfectly clear. Mr. Owen is one of us….’” (Christie 150). This quote completely flips the story upside down as it changes everything the characters believed and completely changes the tone of the story along with creating a very suspenseful moment. This quote changes the tone to a not only scared tone but also an anxious tone. This quote also creates suspense that hasn’t previously been in the story by saying that one of the fellow island guests has murdered everyone that is dead and is currently in the same room as everyone
