One of his teachers I quoted as having said that his, “attention seems to focus on anything that moves, crawls, or flies” (Andrew’s Teacher 7). When his brother, Norman, and him were old enough they got a dog who they named Scamp. The trio would go on adventures together even during the cold Scotland winters. During one of these winters the Simpson family watched the movie The Road Warrior with Mel Gibson, which was set in Australia. The climate inspired Andrew to take a backpacking trip to Australia. As he was trekking through the savannah, he came across the opportunity to be cast as an extra in the movie A Cry in the Dark. Whenever Andrew had breaks from his work he would watch the dingo trainer from afar, this was his first experience seeing animal training in the movies. He found his calling in animal training and began travelling through Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada looking for work. Mr Simpson found work in the movie Quigley Down Under, where he trained dingoes and kangaroos. This was his first film in a long string of work that led to him helping with the animal training in Braveheart. Around this time Simpson joined the company Vancouver’s Creative Animal Talent.
