The rolling hills of Green Gables and the abundance of sparkling waters provide the perfect scope for the imagination. Anne is a young orphan with an imagination of gigantic proportions. She spends her days at the orphanage or in service, day dreaming of better things than her current situation. The book Anne of Green Gables takes place on Prince Edward Island on a farm called Green Gables in 1908. The setting causes Anne to stick out more than she would in today’s society. Anne was ahead of her time and believed that girls could and would do anything a boy could. The setting provides many of ways for Anne to get into trouble and she does so readily and excitedly. Her past makes it hard for her to fit in and she dreams of having extravagant dresses with puff sleeves like her dear friend Diana. The setting matched her personality perfectly and it was a really healthy place for her to be. Anne ran wild among the trees and hills and they brightened her. She had been so repressed and restrained in the city full of smoke and grime. She grew into the woman she was meant to be because of the people and places around her. Her use of vocabulary was one of the things, as a reader, I admired about Anne. She wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself or her friends and even though she had a temper that “wasn’t appropriate for young girls,” she still found a way to achieve all that she wished for in life. In 1908 sexism was a big part of society but Anne wasn’t about to let that stop her. She ran wild and free and tried as hard as she could to be the best person she could.
