In the novel Number the Stars, the protagonist Annemarie felt “it was harder for the ones who were waiting, Annemarie knew. Less danger, perhaps, but more fear” (pg. 113). The story is told from Annemarie’s point of view and the author is trying to build tension for what comes next. However, I do not agree with Annemarie because both the people being rescued and the rescuers were in real, life threatening danger. There is no reason to think that they faced less fear than she did wait at home. Of course, the rescuers and rescued people were terrified. They were at risk of being tortured and killed!
