Anorexia is an eating disorder in which the person refuses to eat food for long periods of time, to the point of having their body lack the nutrients needed in their body to function properly. However, even though they have gotten to a point where their body mass has greatly decreased, people with anorexia develop body dysmorphia, in which they believe that their body is grotesque. People with anorexia believe that they are fat and therefore, they develop an intense fear of weight gain. Bulimia is an eating disorder in which the person vomits a large amount of food they just consumed known as binge sessions as a form of compensation to prevent weight gain. However, compensatory behavior does not just mean in the form of vomiting, it can be done in different manners as well such as fasting or excessive exercise.

Therefore, having high Expressed Emotion in a family environment is a risk factor for an adolescent girl with an eating disorder. Because let’s say for example, the parents of this girl were to find that their daughter has gained some weight and they constantly make small jokes about it; this type of behavior can easily lead to the girl’s dissatisfaction with her weight and can result in her wanting to lose weight by either not eating at all or vomiting her meals. Let’s also give another example, in which perhaps the family finds out that their daughter has developed an eating disorder in which they do not eat. Because of this finding they constantly have their daughter on vigilant watch while eating and perhaps force her to eat in front of them. This can result in her vomiting her meals whenever they are not watching
