Abstract on Anthem by Ayn Rand
Plot: A child named Equality 7-2521, who has found a secret hide-a-way a.k.a a hidden tunnel to hide and write in, knows that this solitude violates laws of his society. Then when he was 10, he saw an execution of a man who spoke the word “I”. Shortly after that he then begins to conduct experiments with electricity shortly after its discovery, thus creating the light bulb, which he would like to present to the world council. Before he should present it, he meets a fair female by the name of the Golden One, which of whom he falls in love with. Before he could show the council the light bulb, he takes an unfortunate turn of events. He gets thrown into prison and is tortured for coming home late. He breaks out of prison though. Only to be disappointed by the councils reaction to the light bulb. He then runs out of the city into the uncharted forest where he and the Golden One start a new civilization.
Characterization: One of the characters that are important to this story is The Transgressor of the Unspeakable Word; He shows Equality 7-2521 the way to die properly. By dying in the inferno of Individualism, which is also accompanied by the feeling of egoism, he shows a more radical way of life one worth living. Another character worth recognizing is the Golden One, for she has made a big impact on Equality 7-2521’s life. She fell in love with Equality because he is different from the others, and in return, he gave his love back. Although it may seem she plays a small role in this game, you are mistaken.
Setting: Anthem is set in a dystopian society, for those of you who do not know what a dystopia is but do know what a utopia is, just picture the opposite of a utopia.. More specifically it is set in a city, a community if you will where every aspect of a human is controlled by the government by “the great WE”. Although this story is rather unclear about the setting of Anthem, we can take out little aspects of it and put together something of it.
Conflicts: The main conflict of the story is how difficult it is for an individual to express their
