In Anthony Doerr's novel, "All the Light We Cannot See" The story begins in 1934 with Marie Laure, a seven-year-old girl who loses her sight, and nine-year-old Werner Pfenning, a white-haired German boy. Marie Laure lives with her father. She spends her time at the museum, where her father works. She learns about various themes, such as a cursed diamond known as the Sea of Flames, and her father teaches her how to find her way home by examining the miniature model of the town he created for her. Werner discovers a broken radio in Zollverein, which he and his sister find fascinating. Werner fixes the faulty radio and gains popularity in town.
