It is very important that I work effectively in a team. Week four’s presentation talks about group behavior. Each team, including the math department, operates under an indirect, unspoken covenant in which we hold ourselves mutually accountable for certain items (Liberty University). We all operate under the umbrella of a power structure. Power is defined as “a capacity that a person has to influence the behavior of person B so that person B acts in accordance to person A’s wishes” (Robbins & Judge, p. 412, 2009). According to the assessment, I tend to like reward power, which is where people “comply because it produces positive benefits; someone who can distribute rewards others views as valuable will have power over them” (p. 414). While I am able to adequately listen and communicate effectively with my students, I am unable to communicate without letting my emotions cloud my speech within the department. I tend to be an emotional person, and I speak out when a decision affects the success of my students. In particular, I have found that I can play a more active role as a faculty member by taking on more leadership roles. In the past, I rejected notions of attending various professional development sessions pertaining to being a leader within a school. I tend to like being in the classroom and do not want to be promoted to a leadership role because I feel that it will take away from my students. However, these leadership positions, I have found, will help me become a better teacher and a better colleague.
