A survey was created and distributed to the freshman cadets as they started their first semester, and then distributed to a combination of all levels of cadets at the end of the school year. In addition to the survey, thirteen focus group questions were developed and meetings were scheduled with groups of 10 cadets each. Each focus group participated answered 13 written questions and then participated in a discussion about each of the questions. Random samples of the responses were and placed in to categories, and an agreed upon rating scale was assigned by the researchers to ensure consistency among the focus groups. After reviewing the results of the initial surveys and focus groups, it was decided that all of the new cadets would be surveyed during the first two weeks of the fall semester. Additionally, a sample of cadets from all of the different grades would be surveyed during the late spring. There were 9 constructs used for the survey during the fall semester and 10 used during the spring semester. The survey focused on the likelihood that the cadet would choose “contract” with the Corps of Cadets once they graduated. The constructs that were measured included self-efficacy, optimism, hardiness, grit, achievement striving, perceived organizational support (POS), propensity to trust, cynicism, and psychological contract …show more content…
There were 247 cadets that participated in the focus groups with 44.1% of them being sophomores, 30.8% were juniors, and 12.6% were either freshman or seniors. A majority of cadets make their decision on whether or not to contract during their sophomore or junior year. The results showed that about 60% of the cadets were attracted to the Corps for several reasons being military professionalism, discipline, general training, and specialty training. The results also indicated that the cadets also joined the Corps because they desired to commission and have military bearing, and a desire to be part of the military. There were 200 cadets that signed a contract that were part of the focus groups. The reasons for their decision were patriotism (31%), job security (21.5%), becoming and officer (16.5%), and leadership (11%). Training and leadership were among the items that the cadets felt that would help them succeed. Many of the cadets indicated that they joined the Corps with intentions of contracting and were happy to find that they also enjoyed the untended social aspect of it. When asked about finding friendship and camaraderie as a result of joining, only 9% had an expectation of finding this, however, over 25% mentioned this as a benefit when
