Jasmine is a 34-year-old single mother. She was employed as a data entry clerk for a large company before it outsourced it’s jobs. She was making decent money and was home with her children by 5pm. After she lost that job, she gained employment at two part time low paying jobs, but has lost one job, leaving her with not enough money to meet her financial obligations. She had been employed for two years as a cashier at a small retail store, but because of a larger store that opened down the street, there had been less business and she had to be let go. She is still currently employed part time as a cashier at a local fast food restaurant. Both of her children attend school and free after school programs. She also has rent due and will be two months behind if she does not pay and is worried about possible eviction. Jasmine has gained job skills from her previous and current employment which include cashiering, communication, teamwork, entering information into a computer database system, basic computer word processing, inventory collection, and ordering products from wholesale companies.

The client came to the career counselor because she saw a flyer at her local grocery store about career exploration. In this situation, the immediate crisis is the loss of electric and possible eviction. The client is worried about her essential needs and will most likely not be able to focus on her self-exploration and career development until her basic needs are met.The counselor would build rapport with the client by showing empathy, care, and unconditional positive regard. The counselor would conduct financial counseling so that client will be more ready to move into the job-search phase
