As has been stated before, this was first of all done through the introduction of a product that could balance the market. This product needed to be one that has the same effects on the recipients as the tea had, if not more. Therefore, the final decision was to bring in a drug that would be addictive to the population, and the opium trade began. Due to the increase in the demand for opium by the Chinese population, the British were soon able to export tons of opium. This soon brought the balance that they wanted because the Chinese population soon got so attached to the drug that they were willing to do anything for it, including reducing the prices and increasing the amount of tea that was going into Britain.
