American’s spend only 10% of their disposable income on food. You think it would be much more than that, but surprisingly it is not. So why do we spend less money on our food than other countries? What do we have in America that makes the people of our country spend less on food, that other countries don’t have? I think technology and machines play a major role in keeping the cost of our food down. Technology is advancing everyday. Technology is important to farmers; they use technology to make advances in food production. Having the right equipment can make almost any job easier. Nowadays, technology does not require as many people to work on farms. Farms are growing in size because of increased efficiency. Because we used to not have machines to do it for us, cows had to be milked by hand. However, now, we have milking machines that take less people to run and less time to spend on milking the cow. “It would take one hour to milk six cows by hand. However, with a milking machine, you could milk 100 cows at the same time” (Animal Smart n.d). This results in more milk for us as Americans, because more of it is being made faster. Now technology is so advanced that a farmer could get their animals health information through an app on their phone that is connected with the tag. Farmers have to pay less for labor if they use these tags. They do not have to pay people to go out and check the animals if they can just easily look it up on their phone. The decision to purchase an electronic ID system needs to be well thought out because the purchase will probably impact profitability. (Evans, J., Davy, J., & Ward, T, 2005). Farmers can also use these tags as a unique identity system and to identify each animal from another and to record an animal’s health and nutrition.
