A regular summer school day for students and faculty turned deadly 41 years ago. It would be a day that would leave painful scars that would haunt many for the the rest of their lives. It was on the morning of Monday, July 12, 1976, a mass shooting within a matter of five minutes dramatically changed the course of history, marking Orange Country with the largest massing shooting, until the Seal Beach salon shooting in 2011.

A custodian at Cal State Fullerton named Edward Charles Allaway, 37, with a past history unknown to many of his coworkers, had mental health issues and would later be diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. It would be his hallucinations and his paranoia that would mark his rampage against his colleagues in spark of his belief that the librarians were making pornographic films of his second wife. His second wife had filed for divorce prior to the event.

He embarked on his plan on Friday, July 9th, 3 days prior to the event, by purchasing a .22-caliber semiautomatic rifle from a KMart in Buena Park. On the morning of July 12th, he called the supervisor of the custodians Maynard Hoffman at 5:30 am and informed him that he would not be coming into work. After 3 hours, he went to the Pollack Library and killed 7 and injured 2 people. After the ordeal, he fled to an Anaheim hotel near his wife’s job. From there, he called the police and surrendered himself.

Roughly about 10 minutes after, Paul K. Miller, 28, pulled into the loading dock of the library and arrived at the scene. He was surprised there were hardly any cars around him. The police and firefighters arrived.
