Now if the election was based on popular vote, it would be possible for a candidate to receive the highest number of popular votes without actually obtaining a majority. This happened with President Nixon in 1968 and President Clinton in 1992, when both men received 43% of the popular vote while winning the majority of the electoral votes. The electoral process was to to give the president more credibility; for example, President Obama received 51.3% of the popular vote but had 61.7% of the electoral votes. First of all, the electoral college was created to give more direct power to all the states because not only does it gives a fair representation but it also prevents direct election to the presidency. It was created to balance out the voting in each state by assigning certain delegates to vote for our president.
