While at his NTC rotation PFC Thiel was tasked by SFC Graff with being at the trucks at 0630 to begin the duty day. PFC Thiel along with a few others were late to the trucks. As a result everyone in the company lost the privilege of going to the shoppete to get supplies by punishment of SFC Graff. While on guard duty the night before going to the field PFC Thiel was unable to clean his weapon because he did not have a weapons cleaning kit. SSG Gaburri told PFC Thiel to go and buy a weapons cleaning kit and a few other things at the shoppete. The word derelict means one guilty of neglect of duty. This means that the person on duty fail to perform their duties that they were assigned. An example of this is if a soldier is asleep on duty. While sleeping you are not able to perform your duties so you are in dereliction of duty. Another example is being intoxicated on duty. While on duty you have to perform and being intoxicated you cannot perform to army standards. Dereliction of duty covers anything that does not meet the standards. As a soldier it is your responsibility to know the standards while on duty so that you can meet the standard. All in all, Article 92 covers failure to obey an order or regulation. This involves failure to obey a general or lawful order even if it is not given directly to that soldier. Also, dereliction in the performance of duties is a violation of Article 92. In the situation stated earlier the proper thing for PFC Thiel to do was to seek guidance from SFC Graff. When PFC Thiel received the order from SSG Gaburri that conflicted with the order from SFC Graff he should have sleeked guidance from the next highest ranking soldier in his chain of command. While at NTC this was SFC Graff. PFC learned a valuable lesson on how to follow direct and lawful orders. This time it was about something as simple as going to the shoppete for supplies next time it could be a much more serious situation on the battle field. An example of
