Arts education and funding for the arts go hand in hand when united. In today’s society, the manner by which the government chooses to spend their money immensely impacts the general public. Funding for arts education is currently a controversial topic of discussion. There are people who passionately support arts education and argue on behalf of seeing funding for arts education be either sustained or increased. On the other hand, many people support cuts in arts education funding and have critical perspectives on the issue as well. Furthemore, “The Unevenness of Art Education Policies,” written by Thomas A. Hatfield makes the issue he sees within arts education clear and then provides solutions, eventually calling the readers to action. For instance, the author brings to light that arts education programs in America are uneven and unorganized but can be fixed with structure and competence. . In addition, the book “A Principle of Matter,” written by Ronald Dworkin, is basically one of the counter arguments supporting cuts that I will utilize. Dworkin makes use of evidence, claims, and opinions while discussing art’s funding much like the other sources. The work “Liberalism, Art, and Funding,” written by Dale Francis Murray focuses on disproving Dworkin’s argument from the book “A Principle of Matter,” instead furthering his own agenda up until the end. With the use of my sources and research, I will then lead into why funding needs to be increased for arts education funding. With information from other authors, I plan on including my own personal experience with the american arts education system and how it caused me to support subsidies for arts education funding. Following my own perspective, I will dive into examining and disproving the counterargument. This ties in with a task I am currently working towards for this paper. I am actively working on finding more academic sources, specific research, statistics, and especially more counter arguments to disprove. The opposing perspectives I have been reading want to see cuts in arts education funding because they foresee a better use for the government’s spending and have noticed problems in the american arts education system.
