Case Study Response - Question One Political in-fighting, typically viewed as a negative issue, is necessary to achieve compromises that give results to the citizens that are served. The added stress of politics in any organization provides a level of motivation for leadership to engage with each other and talk about relevant problems within their departments. Conversely, when this motivation turns toxic, it often leads to a breakdown in communication. In fact, research by HR Magazine “found that managers waste 20% of their time managing politics” (New Charter University, 2012). Political in-fighting can become more troublesome when dealing with limited resources, as has been the case for many communities over the past 5-10 years. In an effort to reduce the negative aspects of political in-fighting, getting the differing opposing groups together for productive talks is important. I would steer the groups into understanding the value of strategic planning, and how each of them can benefit from analyzing the results of our studies. Furthermore, since most community councils likely vote in new members every four years, the three year strategic planning process will enable the current council to make needed adjustments to regain support if their constituents. This will result in leadership motivation to make the hard choices; after all, if they fail their jobs are on the line. In a five year plan what real motivation would a member have in making changes to strategic plans that have identified problems? It would be easier to gloss over those problems when there may be no stressors related to the failures of the mission
