Assignment 2
It is my responsibility as a teacher to have the right qualifications, good use of resources and a good subject knowledge primarily in beginning to teach. I must also have well prepared lesson plans prior to the course starting in order to better understand the needs of my learners. I would be mindful of how my room is set up prior to commencement of the course. I would also always keep in mind that everyone learns differently and keep in mind the three types of learners, auditory, visual and kinaesthetic. I would be aware of how well learners are taking on information by their actions and interactions and would make sure my teaching styles were varied enough to incorporate all learners.
Once started I would make my learners aware of any 'housekeeping' such as where the fire exits are, whether a fire drill is expected at that venue, the location of the toilets and to have learners turn their mobiles off or put on silent for minimum disruption to the lesson. If necessary, depending on the learner group, I might also want to draw up some ground rules such as allowing everyone to speak without interruption, no swearing, listen to others opinions and respect them etc.
I would then ensure that a registration form has been filled in and identification has been checked if needed. I would also have learners fill out an enrolment form at the beginning and an evaluation form at the end of the course. This is vital to help improve future courses.
During the course I would demonstrate good listening skills by reiterating and feeding back to the learner. I would also be aware of the tone of my voice and ensure everyone can hear what I'm saying. I would endeavour to be friendly, warm and entertaining where needed and would encourage group interaction throughout the lesson.
I would be aware of the administrative process behind setting up a course and would check the course pack prior to ensure that all forms, exam papers, books, spare paper, pens etc are present. I would also make learners aware of the time-scales involved in producing and sending certificates as this will vary whether they come from an awarding body or whether they are produced in house. I would also be aware of the importance of getting the completed course pack back to the administrator as quickly as possible so that they can produce certificates and invoices.
I would also check the venue location and whether any hired equipment has been ordered ie; a hoist. I would also be responsible for ensuring that delivery of the course suits the learner’s needs and take my cue from them as to whether the pace of the course is pitched at the right level.
For any course I deliver I would always take into account the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 namely in ensuring that the environment is warm enough, there's enough space for comfort and the lighting is suitable. This act also highlights the roles and responsibilities of the employer and that of the individual learner as an employee.
I would also always refer to the data Protection Act 1998 to highlight to learners how we process and store the personal information that they have provided. I would have highlighted on the register and enrolment forms, specifically that the information provided will not be passed on to any third parties.
In relation to delivering People Moving and Handling training I would be aware of and refer to some other pieces of legislation namely Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), Provision and Use of Working Equipment Regulations (PUWER), Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurances Regulations (RIDDOR) and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 as these are all relevant to the learners on this course as all being employed or wanting to gain employment in Health & Social Care.
Once I have completed my initial assessment, identified learners needs and any
