What is asthma and why do so many people have it? Asthma is a respiratory condition in which a person’s respiratory airway becomes inflamed, narrow, swollen, and produces extra mucus which makes breathing difficult. Asthma does not affect one age group, it affects both children and adults worldwide. It is quite surprising, but asthma has increased recently and becoming more common among the society.
Asthma is traced back to ancient times in Egypt and China. In the nineteenth century, historians discovered prescriptions written in hieroglyphics to treat a strange respiratory disease. Such remedies were discovered in China as well where the main treatment seemed to be inhaling herbal fumes for treating what seemed to be asthma, given the symptoms. There is also evidence that ancient Greeks studied asthma under Hippocrates, the father of medicine. “In fact, the word ‘asthma,’ is Greek in origin” (Discover…). There have also been a lot of modern discoveries made about asthma and improvement in medicines used to treat asthma.

Individuals can learn how to control their asthma, they can get regular checkups, use the inhaler provided by the doctor, and learn how to avoid asthma triggers or situations that can cause an asthma attack. Asthma can last a lifetime, and can possibly be even fatal if the affected person does not take care of themselves. The most important step to prevent asthma attacks from happening often, is self care. If a person fails to avoid harmful substances like smoking or avoid places and things which can trigger the asthma attack, this can lead to more attacks to the point where it worsens and becomes fatal. Hopefully, in the near future, there would be procedures that cure asthma for
