My own mother was a refugee. Her family came by boat from Croatia, to seek a new and happier life in Australia. On their arrival, they were welcomed and greeted by fellow Australians. They were not sent off to detention centres, to then be stripped of their dignity. But this was back in the early 70’s, much has changed since then.

How anyone can use an awful tragedy like this as evidence to justify anything is beyond my comprehension.
Our current Government policy on asylum seekers is quietly contradicting all the values we stand for as a country. It goes against our long-cherished ideals of tolerance and mateship.
In my opinion, fleeing your country is definitely not an easy decision. An asylum seeker seeking to find refuge in Australia can expect not only to face the risks of indefinite detention, but also the risk of death while under Australian care.
These people have come to Australia pursuing a better life and we lock them up hundreds of kilometre from the mainland.
