Do we see these ‘asylum seekers, boat people and refugees’ as individuals, as families fleeing from persecution seeking a better life? Or do we simply see them as a homogenous, voiceless mass who are an inherent burden on Australia? I ask you these questions as I believe that Australian’s need to open their eyes and see the truth; that these people are just like us.

1: Australia is a refugee magnet. The truth is that Australia only takes in 0.6% of the worlds’ refugee population. With this is mind, Australia more of a repellent rather than a magnet.
Myth no. 2: Asylum seekers are illegal immigrants. In 1951 Australia signed the Convention on the Status of Refugees. Recognising the right of any individual to enter a country for the purpose of seeking asylum, regardless of the means by which they arrive. Meaning the ‘boat people’ are allowed and Australia is breaking transnational law with its turn back the boats policy.
Myth no. 3. Most asylum seekers come to Australia by boat. In reality less than half of Australia’s refugee arrivals come by boat, with majority coming by plane.
Myth no. 4: Turning back the boats aims to stop refugees from dying at sea, by breaking the people smugglers “business model”. In Amnesty’s 2015 report ‘By hook or by crook; Australia’s abuse of asylum seekers at sea, found that Australian officials ‘paid off’ people smugglers to turn their boats around back to Indonesia.
