Around the time of trial, Atticus was sitting outside the county jail where Tom was sleeping to protect himself from any lynch mobs that came through Maycomb. That night, Jem took Dill and Scout to the jail to see what Atticus was doing, just to see a lynch mob surrounding him. Young Scout squeezed her way through the crowd to get to her father. After finding Mr. Cunningham in the crowd, and talking about his legal affairs in front of the mob, Scout is confused when everyone around her is shocked. She recalls how, “Atticus said nothing.Mr Cunningham’s face was equally impassive. Then he did a peculiar thing.he straightened up and waved a big paw. ‘Let’s clear out boys’ he called.”(175).
