At first he tried for the Marines, who turned him down because he only stood at five foot six inches tall. Murphy then went and tried to join the Paratroopers, but they also denied him for not meeting their standards. Still determined to serve like most young men at the time, Audie decided to settle for the Army Infantry.
After his basic training, he was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in North Africa where he would prepare to fight in multiple campaigns throughout Italy. During his combat tour through the Mediterranean, he quickly proved to be a highly skilled soldier and proficient shooter, making his way quickly through the ranks of enlistment. One of his more notable actions occurred when he was fighting in Southern France. His best friend was lured out into the open by a German soldier pretending to surrender, who was consequently shot and killed. Having just seen his friend killed in front of him, he was enraged and killed the German soldiers. Murphy then commandeered a machine gun and grenades from the dead enemies and went on take out several more German positions. This earned him the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second highest award for
