A “peer mentoring program” at my high school allowed me to interact with students with special needs. I take tremendous pride in my friendship with another non-verbal boy with autism. To this day, we go bowling, swimming, and to amusement parks. One day I picked him up to go swimming. He was glowing with happiness and laughter. When I asked what was so amusing, he responded with one word: happy. I am greatly satisfied knowing that our time together has brightened his life and the life of his whole family.
My profound passion for assisting those with special needs took on a new direction as I discovered new ways to help. When I took my first biology class as a junior in high school, I began to realize my potential to help those with special needs in a biological fashion.
