Music originated from the Ancient Greek muses, who were the nine goddesses that oversaw the arts and science. The main type of music during the Middle Ages was the Gregorain chant, which had been named after Pope Gregory I. Catholic Churches used this music that was a sacred Latin text sung by monks without using instruments, to engage people in servives. The music was quite free-flowing and didnt have an officcial beat. The chants sung were so often sang, monks began to notate the one line pieces. Toward the end of the Middle Ages, music began to spread outside of the church. French nobles were among the first to write nonreligious songs while court minstrels performed the songs. Court minstrels were among the lowest class but were still important to soceity because they passed around news and events. During the Renaissance time period (1450-1600), vocals were still more common and more appreciated than instrumental music. To represent the moods of unity and continuity, the musical language had specific melodies and rythems that unified the mood for vocals. Throughout the piece of music, melodies would vary and was quite difficult for people to remember because they werent very balanced, unlike the Renaissance period. During the Baroque time period, dynamics were reffered to as terraced dynamics which menas that the dynamics stayed the same in songs for a while, but would ubruptly change. This was a time when monarchies in Europe strived to excel eachother in pride, pomp, and pageantry. People often believed that music could move listeners in more than one way which made Opera popular during this time period becuase of others views.
