When people have a job that they hate, there's no effort to put all their efforts in the work. In the story “Bartleby the Scrivener”, Bartleby is the type of worker Thoreau cautions against. For example, when Bartleby says “I would prefer not to...”(Melville, 81). Based on this, the “passive resistance” as the Lawyer called it, seems as if the intention was obvious to keep himself away of doing anything. While reading Life Without Principle, it was pointed out that how people should live. For example in the text he says “You must get your living by loving”(Melville). Based on this, Thoreau was pointing out that people should try and find a job that could lead to a career that they may love.
