There are circumstances where one must throw away their sense of identity to belong in a particular group. This is being shown where Jole is being put in a situation where he is has to sing a song that may go against his culture and beliefs. Jole academically and athletically fits into his new school. This is shown when Jole plays basketball and dominates the game. The fast paced music makes the scene more exciting and it shows he is better than the other students that were playing with him and his teammates acknowledged him. He was also the only one to answer the teacher’s question in English class. This shows that Jole belongs to this school and is being accepted by others through his talent. The choice of belonging or not belonging is up the individual. In the first scene of assembly Jole does not sing the National Anthem because he does not know the lyrics. He is left out and this becomes a barrier to belonging. The second time Jole refuges to sing the National Anthem because he believes the song isn’t meant for him.
