“What is belonging uncertainty?” When high school students make the transition from high school to college, it can be very difficult to adjust to. It is a completely different environment. Some even enter having no friends and seemingly no one to connect with. This is when belonging uncertainty comes into play. Belonging uncertainty is a feeling that one has when he is unsure that he does not fit in a certain environment. The feeling is greatly common among college freshmen. It usually derives from racial discomfort.
Racial Discomfort Racial discomfort is when one feels out of place due to his/her race. Commonly, individuals who are minorities experience such discomfort. Dr. Walton best describes this as “visitor on campus”. College is supposed to be a comfortable environment for all the students, no matter their ethnicity or racial background. Due to stereotyping and certain disadvantages, some student experience otherwise. Therefore, there has to be an intervention of some sort in order to allow students have the best experience possible. A great college experience can open the door for a better and positive future.

Some students who are minorities have experienced someone telling them that they will never be as smart as the white kid or Chinese “computer whiz”. “Why is this?” one might ask. Over the years, the educational system has been manipulated and some students have not had the same advantages as others. Therefore, these stereotypes were created based on the performance rates of these minority groups when compared with majorities. These stereotypes have left minorities stagnant.
