The first illustration of his courage is shown in his battle with the monster Grendel, despite the stories of terror about Grendel, Beowulf sails to Denmark to confornt the monster. He stations himself in Heorot, the banquet hall where the monster has recently slain thirty men. While his men sleep, Beowulf alone waits for the monster. His wait is short-lived, for the monster furiously forces open the huge entrance door and greedily devours the man nearest him. Beowulf, without the aid of an weapons or his men immediately jumps to his feet and struggles with monster Grendel has never saw such strength in a man before as Beowulf possesses. Beowulf follow the sea-trol back to her cave under the sea. To get there, he has to swim for almost a day into the depths of the sea. When he reaches her, the two engage in a furious battle. With her long claws the sea-troll tries to tear Beowulf’s armor off, but to no avail. Finally the courgeious prince grabs an ancient sword and sinks it deep into the flesh of the sea-troll she dies in
