The main character, Beowulf is shown as an epic hero in the book Beowulf. There are three traits that support the fact that he is an epic hero. First, the noble birth, second, the capable of deeds of great strength and courage and third one is his great warrior.
First of all, most epic heroes will have an above average station in life. Commoners usually do not become epic heroes. They will be kings, princes, or nobles of some sort, so luck is needed to be an epic hero. It is not like nowadays, that those who work hard will succeed. Their destinies were decided even before they were born. If a child was born in a farmer’s family, then he or she has to be a farmer. They could never be a successful person even if they were smart. So the fact that Beowulf is a cousin of the kings is perfect to be an epic hero.
Secondly, Beowulf has the potential for great deeds. He was the strongest, mightiest and greatest of all the Geets. He was confident to fight with Grendel, and he believed that God will give him power an will protect him. He once said, “No strength is a match for mine.” and “He could never leave me behind, swim faster across the waves than I could.” (Raffel 25) These show that he was great and strong enough to be an epic hero.
