Bilbo Challenges

Bilbo faced many challenges on his quest to the lonely mountain. These problems ranged from hunger to facing a dragon. Although there were a lot of challenges, there were 6 main ones that really stood out. The first trial that happened was on pages 27-42. This is when Bilbo Baggins encountered trolls. Bilbo was sent by the dwarfs to get food, but ended up trying to steal a purse. Unluckily for Bilbo, this purse could talk and this ratted him out to the trolls. The dwarfs came to help but also got trapped so in the end, Gandalf came to the rescue and distracted the trolls until they turned to stone from the sun. After minor challenges in between, the adventure group found themselves in the hands of the Goblins. Little did they know that this cave belonged to the Goblins. The adventure team ended up being captured. A little later, they escaped but found themselves being chased. Bilbo was unfortunately left behind alone. This is when Bilbo met Gollum in a deep dark cave on page 65-84 in the chapter Riddles in the Dark. This is a very important trial because this is when Bilbo found the ring of power. Bilbo will be using this item a lot in the future. Gollum is a creature who was a former hobbit who is obsessed with this ring. He meets Bilbo, not knowing Bilbo has possession of it. Gollum wants to eat Bilbo but Bilbo wants a way out so they decide to play a game of riddles, the winner of this game gets what they want. Bilbo ended up winning this game which infuriated Gollum and he still tried to eat Bilbo. Bilbo just barely escaped. With the ring, Bilbo was able to get back to his squad. As Bilbo said himself “Out of the Frying Pan into the Fire.” This quote is basically saying escape one thing to be caught by another. This is the name of the chapter when Bilbo gets caught by Wargs right after escaping the Goblins and
