The U.S. Constitution is the governing document of the United States of America. It has been enforced since 1789. One of its purpose, is to lay out the separation of powers among the executive, legislative and the judicial arms of government in the United States. They also exist to protect the minority rights and the majority rule with time. According to the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are three documents known collectively as the Charters of Freedom. These documents have secured the rights of the American people for many years and they are considered instrumental to its founding and philosophy of the United States (National Archives, 2016). The first three safeguards liberty, amendments four to eight safeguards justice, and the last two deal with other rights and powers. The first amendment has a lot of importance to it and contains a lot of democratic functions. It states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances”.
