Due to poor water waste treatment in Ontario combined with introducing a birth control pill in waterways created a chain reaction in a lake which almost wiped out a particular fresh water fish. This is an example of how human intervention has affected biodiversity. When the water waste treatment failed to stop the contents from the birth control pill from going into the lake estrogen was released into the water. With estrogen in the water the male fish started to respond to the exposure b starting to produce egg yolk and eventually producing eggs. It was turning male fish into female fish which was very dangerous. This fish was the fat-head minnow and their population was reduced to 1% of what it was previously. This also caused insects to increase.
Personally I think this problem needs to be resolved as soon as possible. With estrogen mixing into our water it could start to affect multiple species, even us.
Biodiversity, “the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem” is very important to all aspects of life and has many benefits. 40% of the world’s economy and 80% of the needs of the poor are developed from biological resources. The more diversity, the more opportunity for medical discoveries, economic development, and adaptive responses to new challenges we must face due to climate changes. It is important we keep all the aspects of our planet diverse.
