According to a report, television shows with black cast members are starting to change the way viewers watch their favorite shows. Not long ago, the entertainment industry claimed that black TV shows were too targeted to become popular.
We’ve all seen a trend of sitcoms and dramas with black actors through the years. However, some of them have been replaced with more mainstream shows.
Nonetheless, there is already a shift in trend when it comes to black TV shows. Based on a Nielsen report, black TV shows are starting to dominate the airwaves and these shows are also attracting non-black viewers as well.

Plus, these shows are now becoming popular with a diverse set of audience. This means, the more viewers, the higher the ratings.
Other popular shows such as Black-ish, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and Atlanta, are just among a few other hit programs that draw in an audience with more than 50% non-black viewership. Meanwhile, other shows with prominent main black actors are also a hit.
NBC’s Award-nominated comedy drama series, This is Us, generates an 89% non-black viewership. The story of the show is about a black businessman who is raised by white parents. The show touches topics such as racism, homosexuality, alcoholism, and drug addiction among many others.
According to Nielsen, their findings show that American viewers are not as divided as people think. Senior Vice President at Nielsen, Andrew McCaskill, states that television shows that have storylines with black characters are crossing other cultures and are now generating a diverse set of viewers.
