Book Banning vs. John Green Over time and history, myriad books have been banned as society constantly questions their contents and whether they should be allowed in public libraries for all to read. While people's cautiousness regarding books is understandable, it is unreasonable to ban these books in certain areas/places around the world or country because of personal beliefs or interests regarding what is good or bad. To be specific, those who fervently support banning books across the states mainly target female authors, books referring to people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other topics considered inappropriate for public schools and libraries by extremist parents/adults. Emphasis on certain types of representations of sex and sexuality—such as losing your virginity, teen pregnancy, and sexual identity—ensures YA’s place as a space of exploration and for figuring out our relationships to difficult topics.” (PEN America) This quote illustrates how most bans occur because of the presence of sex and sexuality, which affects the accessibility of young adult books as the climate of censorship grows, school book bans continue to spread through coordinated campaigns by a vocal minority of groups and individual actors, and community pressure and state legislation Other factors that cause the ban of books are hyperbolic and misleading rhetoric about porn in schools, sexually explicit content, harmful, and age-inappropriate materials, which have led to the removal of thousands of books covering a range of topics and themes for young audiences, especially in public schools because they have long been deemed essential to American democracy. Patricia Wong, president of ALA, said: "We support individual parents' choices concerning their child's reading and believe that parents should not have those choices dictated by others. Young people need access to diverse books, which can teach them about different perspectives." (Mazariegos Sullivan 2022) This quote illustrates the ALA and its members' frustration since they can’t find a way to solve the problems of censorship, challenged books, and their ban across the country as it mostly targets books written by minorities with different backgrounds and beliefs.
