Many people do not know a great deal about a small country in Southern Africa called Botswana. Furthermore, most people have no idea that a significant number of the diamonds they wear on their fingers originate from there. Botswana has beautiful scenic views and has a population of 2,127, 825 (“Botswana Facts”). Its capital city is Gaborone, which is also one of its largest cities. Despite it being a country that not many people know much about, Botswana has a very interesting history, geography, and educational system. Botswana’s long history began nearly 30,000 years ago when a group called the San, who specialized in hunting and gathering, were living in Southern Africa. For example, Botswana is searching for a new national income because they are starting to realize that the diamonds are not going to last forever. “The government of Ian Khama, who has enjoyed stability and prosperity because of the profits from the mines, is under a great deal of pressure and as the estimates suggest that the gems will most likely run out in about 15 years.” A few years ago, Botswana also discovered the world's second largest diamond. A small canadian mining company found a gigantic diamond, which quickly became known as the largest diamond found in over a century in Botswana. Botswana is located in Southern Africa, and the climate is mostly warm winters and hot summers. There are many flat and gently rolling tablelands, like the Kalahari Desert. They have many natural resources: diamonds, copper, nickel, salt ash, potash, coal, iron ore, and silver. Botswana also currently has a very good economy compared to some of the other countries in Africa. Their economy had a great rebound from the global economic turndown in 2008. They have amazing management of the public finances, which has then resulted in budget surpluses in recent years. The regulatory environment there encourages plenty of growth and openness to foreign investments. The trade also boosts the competitiveness and resilience. The financial section is quite well developed because of the independent central bank and slight government intervention. There independent judicial branch provides an extremely strong protection of property rights. Botswana's agriculture mainly consists of livestock, particularly cattle goats, sheep, and chickens. The cattle accounts for about a tenth of Botswana’s gross national production. Along with the threat of drought and overgrazing, livestock farmers have to be specifically alert for foot-and-mouth disease because it can spread from wild herds of animals like buffalo.
