On November 8, 2015, heavy rains entered the southeastern area of Brazil causing several dams to fail. The dams giving out lead to massive amounts of mudslides throughout the small villages in the area. It is difficult to confirm how many people are missing or even worse dead. The Mayor released a statement that 28 people are missing and 1 death has been confirmed (15 village residents and 13 mine workers). They have provided machines to help with the searches and are paying for more than 550 people to be housed in shelters. The company has insisted that the mud is not toxic and is not a threat to humans. Which is ironic considering an unknown amount of humans has been swallowed up by the mood. There were no pre-crisis in this article and the Mayor stated, “it’s a disaster, a tragedy of great dimension”. If you can predict it you can prevent it. The engineers and miners in the area had to of known how volatile the mud was in the region and that one good rain could wash everything away. A little more planning and preparation could have alleviated the whole crisis. They are still in the acute crisis phase seeing that there is still a frantic search and rescue in progress. The media has ahold of the story and is trying to keep the masses informed of the situation. However, information is very limited and not always factual. The police have restricted access to the disaster area making it difficult for the journalists to enter. The communication from the government is very poor during this phase of the crisis.
