Legacy, can be defined, very simply as something that is left behind by a person. It need not only be something that a person has earned but also something that an individual has learned. In its holistic context, legacy means to entrust not just materialistic objects but also values and impacts that act as a contribution to mankind.
British imperialism had lasting legacies on India’s social as well as economic positions. This meant that the British imperial interests were largely prioritized over the well-being of the nation and its people, which resulted in an inequitable pattern of development and a weak central government.
The British Raj continued for almost a century, from 1857 to 1947.
The colonial structure in India can be divided into four distinct features.
One, colonialism led to the whole but complex integration of India’s economy with the world capitalist framework but in a subordinate position. This is a pivotal aspect as the integration with the world economy was unavoidable and was an important characteristic of world economies.
