The Promise chapter of C. Wright Mill’s “The Sociological Imagination” has been a really interesting read as many of the points raised can be reflected in my life.
For one, it was interesting to see how much of our lives are heavily dictated by our society and its history. The part that stood out to me was how “every individual… lives out a biography, and he lives it out with some historical sequence” (Mills, 1959). This seems to reflect what my parents have been telling me all my life: that if you follow a certain pathway and build a certain foundation, you will have a comfortable lifestyle. Even though we might think that we are “unique” and “living our own lives”, a general pattern of how our lives will be has already been planned out before
