As a young woman, growth is expected to be graceful in the gradual fruition of womanhood: against all odds of self- criticisms and the judgement of others. The ends justify the means is often used in approach to the crass, brute nature of personal progression. Based on first appearances, this personal manifesto of triumph contained within a book is overlooked on a shelf of many other personal feats of courage and dedicated precision. Maya Angelou’s autobiography, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is a standing testament of endearment amid society’s faults and attributes in a self revivalistic understanding of identity. This benefits humanity as a whole to acknowledge the nuances within self expression and society to encompass a more compassionate humankind. After reading the book, I decided to take it with me to college as it is still relevant today than the day it was published. Every time reading it, I notice more details than what I previously missed before. After talking to my old English teacher, she told me her Grandmother gave her the copy when she was around my age. It was that very book that made her decide on being an English major and to grow into her passion of English. Similarly, we both read that book religiously for Angelou’s incredible insight of humanity through her efforts of emotional development in herself and her environment. It was after the fact that my English teacher told me it given to her that I truly valued the books identity other than its content. As of today it is resides on my bookshelf: waiting for the day where I give the book to someone else in need of her guidance of self identity and dignity. The way Angelou contextualizes herself and her past in order for her to gain a different experience of how she views the world is the ultimate way of storytelling that lasts for generations to come regardless of the continual
