I am researching about California prisons, because my family has a history of serving with the American military and law enforcement. My father is currently a correctional officer at Corcoran Prison and has been working there for over 15 years. He has told me many interesting facts about how the inmates are treated with more respect than they deserve. I want to find out for myself why he makes these claims. The convicts appearance and actions from Great Expectations inspired me to choose this topic.

All of these benefits has raised the cost of prisons in California by 50 million in 23 years accumulating the biggest difference in cost over the last 20 years. Do prisoners deserve these benefits? In many cases prisoners have attempted to cheat the system with these “civil rights”, and for what… money. Inmates are trying to sue officers for excessive force, under Amendment VIII for cruel and unusual punishment. Now most of these cases are not passed, but it has gotten officers fired and inmates money. In one extreme case that my father was involved in at CDCR, Corcoran Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, was that a high level inmate had covered himself and his cell in his own feces. This was obviously a health issue the inmate was removed from his cell using a taser, due to resisting. He died a week later causing the family to sue the officer who had tased him, and they won. The officer was let go and his clean record was ruined with cruel and unusual punishment. These benefits may be accessorizing prisoners to become more like occupants rather than inmates. Inmates are being treated the way they want to be treated, in other words they can bend the original principles, because of new rights and benefits. One fact states that “Prisoners are exploiting a benefits loophole to claim thousands of dollars while behind bars at a Teesside jail, it is reported today.”(Johnston). This is a reason that the rate of inflation does not match up to the prison cost in the last 20 years, as well as free healthcare, food, shelter, and medical attention. “Whichever way Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy votes on the constitutionality of Obamacare, the people of his native state California need only get convicted of a serious crime, particularly if it involves violence, as a sure way to get adequate health care.” (Melissa). Who’s paying for it, California citizens, who already have to pay for food, shelter, healthcare, and medical attention themselves. This money should be going towards students in school, paying for tuition or educational
