That could have been because at the time black people were afraid not to talk ,and felt that they had to treat her respectfully, because fear of the consequences,but on the other hand race relations where not as tense as they are now. It was not fair to Jean Louise to get such a mean spirited response. In the end of the book Jean Louise grows up greatly,she ends up recognizing the hard way that her family isn’t perfect, especially her father. That was a hard pill to sallow if Jean was to go back to the quarters years later, after the Civil Rights Movement. The people on that porch and Calpurina would have a more uplifting message also, if race relations are better in Maycomb. Jean Louise knowing what she knows now know about her father and hopefully the Civil Rights Movement. Wouldn’t hold a grudge towards Calpurina from years before,because she would understand were Calpurina anger and frustration was coming from. When Jean Louise goes back Calpurina will be able to see Jean Louise’s growth and maturity, and hopefully step back into that motherly figure she was to Jean Louise for so many
