In the book, it is evident that changing the manner in which students perceive their own potential and abilities can greatly change their academic performance. The central thesis for this treatise is therefore that, I agree with Carol Dweck’s text, Mindset, which addresses the current issue about academic success. This essay examines the concern that students need to believe and understand that their abilities are not fixed. Simply because they are not in a position to solve a certain “math problem, or achieve a certain goal, currently” it does not imply that they will not be in a position to solve the same after working on it. It clearly means that, if they put more effort they will be able to solve the problems and excel academically.
Particularly in chapter 2, 3 and 4 therefore, this issue is well dealt with. For instance, in chapter 2, she argues that, “the type of mindset adopted by people usually has tremendous effects on every aspect of their life.” (Dweck 7). She goes ahead to explain the meaning of this that students need to have a purpose in their academic actions as well as change their approach towards facing challenges. When coupled with trying of new strategies by students and seeking for assistance and input from mentors when stuck, they can achieve anything academic wise. This is also supported by the quote that, “Intelligence is something you have to work for” (Dweck 9). Which clearly means that motivation is really important in matters academic success.
