Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a medical condition that affects the hands of four to ten million Americans. (4) Most cases can easily be treated at home, when signs first arise. Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can include numbness of the hand, tingling, pain, and weakness when trying to grasp or lift an object. The symptoms may first start appearing at night, and are most noticeable in the thumb, and first three fingers of your hand. The little pinky finger is not affected because the median nerve that causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome only runs through the first four fingers of the hand. Because the Median nerve runs through the wrist, it is possible for pain to also radiate to the forearm. (1, 2) There are many factors that can contribute to causing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome flair ups. Arthritis, previous wrist fractures, pregnancy, diabetes, thyroid disease, and overuse are the number main causes for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Of these causes, the most common reason is overuse. Anti-inflammatory medications can help to reduce the swelling in the wrist, and ease the pain. Using a wrist brace or splint while symptoms are present, or at night while you sleep, can help to keep the wrist positioned in the correct spot. During activities that cause symptoms, make sure to take frequent breaks. Using ice for ten to fifteen minutes at least once an hour will also aid in reducing swelling. If symptoms persist, or worsen, it may be necessary to get cortisone injections to reduce swelling. If Carpal Tunnel Syndrome goes untreated or ignored, Surgery may then be required. (1,
