River’s father was an electrical engineer, and his mother worked part-time at a local library. River’s mother was biracial, with a Latino father and an African-American mother, and his father was Caucasian. River seems to align with Machismo, which is an ideology that promotes expectations of how Hispanic and Latino men are supposed to act, in his case as a father and husband. River recalls his childhood as uneventful. River’s Presenting Problem In high school, River was put in the position of trying to get along with his peers, many of whom would make racist remarks or use racial slurs against his mother, as well as wanting to defend his mother. Around this time, River would start attending parties and taking up drinking. He recalls that drinking was found to be relaxing for him, and helped ease his social anxieties. He also states that he was nervous around women, and would struggle to talk to them, often feeling tongue tied.
