According to the article “Challenging Controlling Images- Appearance Enforcement within Black Sororities” said, “Image is everything!” Members of the sorority felt that image was important, and they used it to sift through perspective individuals that wanted to be part of the organization. They said they followed the intake process of the National headquarters, however they still serve as the caretaker of the organization and wouldn’t accept anything that was contrary to the way they should behave.
Image helped members of BGLO serve as a “gatekeeper” for individuals wanting to join. The members felt they should look the part…not necessarily an actual look but their behavior must fall in line. They didn’t want anyone that will tarnish the organization, therefore the sisters worked hard, going through the candidate pool. They analyzed the individuals. The ladies may look good on paper, but still wasn’t invited to join the intake process, because they don’t meet the other factors. For example, they may have had a bad attitude or a reputation for being with many men on the campus.
