The various deaths that surrounded Jim had a major influence on his conversion in the story. The two deaths in the beginning of the novel were part of the motivation to go to treasure island. Jim states after Billy Bones dies, “The Captain had been struck dead by a thundering Apoplexy. It is a curious thing to understand, since I never liked this man, though I had begun to pity him, but as soon as I saw he was dead, I burst into a flood of tears.
