Chapter 6 of Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen, commences the start of the end of his story of slaves in early America. The chapter opens up to Nightjohn, who is left in terrible condition by Waller for teaching letters, but still decides to continue teaching Sarny despite knowing the cost of losing more of his limbs. Eventually, once his health returns just enough, Nightjohn tells Sarny that he is fleeing the plantation, and so he successfully does, not returning for months. During this time in Nightjohn’s absence, Sarny spirals into near depression since she cannot write anymore and is soon to become a breeder.
