Chapter 7: Mirror Neurons

One of the topics I found particularly interesting in chapter 7 was mirror neurons. A mirror neuron is a type of neuron that responds equally, not only when we execute a specific action, but also when we observe someone else doing the same action. Mirror neurons were discovered in the early 1990’s during an experiment headed by neuroscientist, Giacomo Rizzolatti MD. In his study, researchers attached electrodes to specific neurons in a monkey’s brain. They had the monkey then performed a specific action such as grasping a peanut, as well as view another monkey preforming the same action. The neurons activated in the monkey’s brain while observing another monkey grasping the peanut were the same neurons that were activated when the monkey performed
