Characteristics of a Good Leader What makes a good leader? A leader can vary depending on their role in life; it can be a leader on a sports team, a leader for a company, or a person you look up to and want to be like. Leaders are a very important role in our everyday lives. Leaders are all around us at work, home, and even at school. According to Patrik Bang, an economy without leaders would lead to unproductive businesses and lead to a corrupt society. A good leader expresses a role that not all people can have. They keep order in their company or whatever their role as a leader may be. Without an expressive leader around you, there would be chaos arising in society (Bang). Though a leader must have many attributes, a leader must be able to lead others in the direction they are shooting for. Leaders are very important to us; the most important skill any type of leader must have is the ability to lead others (Bang). Each type of leader shows their leadership differently though. The most known type of leader is an instrumental leader. These type of leaders are the ones known to stay on your case and keep order within their group. The other type of leader is called an expressive leader. These leaders are the most liked of the two because they keep everything calm and like to enjoy what they are doing more than an instrumental leader; they still want the job done, but don’t necessarily care how it gets done.
